Lili Reinhart confirmed her alopecia diagnosis on TikTok this week, recording a video of herself sitting beneath a red light bulb with the words, “Was just diagnosed with alopecia in the midst of a major depressive episode,” over it.
Alopecia is a disorder that causes hair loss, often from the scalp, although it can occur anywhere on the body, according to the Mayo Clinic.
Lili, 27, is lip synching to a popular TikTok song in the video, claiming, “I’m pushed beyond the limits of what a person should be pushed to endure,” while undergoing red light treatment for her alopecia diagnosis.
This is not the first time Lili has discussed her mental health issues on social media. Lili discussed her battle with depression in an Instagram post from May 2021, according to US Magazine.
“Some days, I feel really defeated by my depression,” she wrote in an Instagram Story. “It’s an exhausting battle that I’ve been fighting for 11 years and some days, like today, it can feel intolerable.”
She added: “Remember that you are always worth fighting for. And tomorrow may be such a lovely day.”
The alopecia diagnosis marks a new chapter in Lilli’s health journey. If you’re wondering what the actress’s condition signifies, here’s all you need to know:
Alopecia is an autoimmune condition that causes patients to lose hair on their scalp or in other places of their bodies. According to the Mayo Clinic, hair loss can be both temporary and permanent.
While hair loss can sometimes be reversed, it is usually irreversible.
Alopecia is an autoimmune condition, which means that your immune system attacks your body, specifically your hair follicles. According to the Cleveland Clinic, the body misidentifies follicles as foreign invaders (such as germs or parasites).
