The cause of death for Andre Braugher has been discovered.

Andre Braugher’s longtime publicist, Jennifer Allen, told on Thursday, December 14, that the Brooklyn Nine-Nine veteran died on Monday, December 11, following a quiet battle with lung cancer.

Braugher was diagnosed a few months ago, according to Allen.

On Tuesday, December 12, Us revealed that Braugher had died following a brief illness. He was 61.

Braugher rose to prominence on NBC’s Homicide: Life on the Street, where he won two Emmys. After a run of memorable TV and film performances, Braugher was cast as Captain Ray Holt on Brooklyn Nine-Nine, which aired on NBC and FOX for eight seasons. The figure became a media tentpole for LGBTQIA+ representation. Braugher, who was nominated for two Emmys for his role on Brooklyn Nine-Nine, co-starred with Andy Samberg, Terry Crews, Melissa Fumero, and Stephanie Beatriz.

Following the news of Braugher’s passing, numerous Brooklyn Nine-Nine cast mates paid their respects.

“I will remember what you told me. “I will remember all the times we laughed because your laugh was one of the all-time greatest laughs to have ever existed,” Fumero, 41, said on Wednesday, December 13, via Instagram, sharing many vintage photos. “I will remember your deep love and loyalty to your family.” I’ll remember that every time I request time off from work to spend with my family.”

“I will remember how you sent me pictures of fall trees in NJ because you knew how much I missed that time of year back east,” she said. I’ll never forget how you referred to me as Melly Fumé. I’ll remember so much…. Sir, it was an honor to be in your orbit for a while. My buddy, may you rest in peace.”

Marc Evan Jackson, who portrayed Captain Holt’s TV husband Kevin, also expressed his condolences on Braugher’s death.

“Andre elevated every moment he came anywhere near, and it was an honor to have known and worked with him,” Jackson, 53, said in a statement to Deadline. “My deepest condolences to his family, and all those who like all of us, loved him very much.”

Jackson also paid tribute to Braugher on social media. “Ah, Captain. “My Captain,” he captioned a photo of the two figures kissing on X (previously Twitter).

Braugher’s wife, Ami Brabson, and their three kids survive him, as do his brother, Charles Jennings, and his mother, Sally Braugher.
