T.J. Holmes admits he could ‘easily go through 18 drinks’ in one day

T.J. Holmes and Amy Robach

T.J. Holmes and Amy Robach open up about drinking too much during a stressful and difficult 2023 on their Amy and T.J. podcast Thursday, as they start on a Dry January.

Both Holmes, 46, and Robach, 50, stated that they will refrain from alcohol for at least the first month of the year.

They acknowledged to drinking much more last year in the aftermath of their romance becoming public, at a period when both broadcast journalists were married to other people.

Holmes stated that he could ‘easily go through 18 drinks’ each day, going into detail about what he considers a drink.

‘The official criteria indicate one drink is one beer, a five-ounce glass of wine, or one-and-a-half ounces of liquor,’ the West Memphis, Arkansas resident explained.

Robach admitted to drinking excessively under the stress of the press scandal and the subsequent personal and professional ramifications, with both losing their positions on Good Morning America in January 2023.

The St. Joseph, Michigan native said 2023 reminded her of the early days of the coronavirus outbreak.

‘I didn’t have a job to go to, and I was separated from a lot of friends and relatives,’ Robach explained. ‘What did I do? I drank a much. A lot more than I’ve ever had. I don’t think I’ve ever spent a whole day drinking every day, and that was in 2023.

Robach stated that while she was routinely drinking, she was not ‘getting wasted or intoxicated,’ but rather attempting to modify her mood as she worked through a tough period in her life.

‘It was keeping a buzz going all day,’ she explained, ‘or maintaining a heightened state of mind during a stressful year.

Holmes stated that confronting painful realities was a necessary step in recognizing a problem that needed to be addressed.

‘We have to be honest,’ he remarked. ‘So we are going to be honest about our alcohol use, why we do it, what that number is, and what we intend to do about it.’

He continued, “I am certainly someone who, right now and in the past, needs to reexamine my relationship with alcohol.” And that is exactly what we are doing.
