What Joan Rivers Would Have Thought of Ozempic Craze

Melissa Rivers and Joan Rivers

Melissa Rivers joked that her mother, the late Joan Rivers, would have enjoyed Ozempic, saying, “Her two least favorite things were diet and exercise.”

The Fashion Police presenter, who died in 2014 at the age of 81, is no longer alive to see Hollywood’s latest trends, but daughter Melissa Rivers is providing insight on what the comic may have thought—particularly about celebrities’ recent interest in Ozempic.

“She would have thought Ozempic was the greatest thing since sliced bread,” Melissa joked in an interview with People on January 17. “Her two least favorite things were diet and exercise; what if she could avoid both? Awesome.”

“But she would have been very excited by body acceptance,” she said. “That would have actually made her really happy.”

Joan was aware of her weight during her career as a fashion critic, joking with E! News in 2013 that her notion of cardio is “to the bakery.”

“I never eat more than six donuts at the same time,” she joked. “My dogs look just like me—we all waddle down the street, so awful.”

However, Hollywood has recently embraced a new weight loss trend: Ozempic, with celebrities such as Tracy Morgan and Oprah Winfrey openly discussing their use of the injectable medicine.

According to NBC News, the injectable medicine, which is licensed to treat type 2 diabetes, has become a popular weight reduction tool, causing a scarcity of the treatment.

However, the producer of Ozempic, Novo Nordisk, recently informed E! News in a statement that the medicine is “not approved for chronic weight management” and that it is meant to treat type 2 diabetes in adults.

Still, celebrities aren’t afraid to use it, but some have expressed caution. Sharon Osbourne, for example, does not regret using the medicine, although she did tell the Daily Mail, “You can lose so much weight, and it’s easy to become addicted to that, which is very dangerous.”
