In an exclusive interview, Alexandra Park shared how she manages her busy life while coping with the reality of type 1 diabetes, including her opinions on those who use Ozempic for weight reduction.
Indeed, the injectable medicine, which was initially designed to control type 2 diabetes, has taken the world by storm as a rapid weight-loss method. However, some diabetics, particularly type 1 diabetics like Alexandra Park, endure a very different reality.
“The thing is with Ozempic, I believe it’s a drug that’s mostly prescribed to type 2 diabetics,” she told E! News in an exclusive interview. “So I can’t really talk about it much since type 1 diabetics are insulin-dependent. So our blood sugars cannot be regulated orally with a medicine like Ozempic or something else; they must be managed through insulin—either with an insulin pump or numerous injections daily.”
And concerning the medicine becoming a craze, she said, “I don’t know how that happened, and I hope it’s doing more good than harm.”
Medtronic’s MiniMed 780G insulin pump has been one of the most beneficial tools for the Royals alum in managing her type 1 diabetes, which she was diagnosed with 12 years ago. In fact, Alexandra says it’s changed her life.
“I was looking for a device that would allow me to think about my diabetes less,” she told me. “It’s impossible to live a busy lifestyle and do all the things that I want to do if I can’t maintain great control, and the MiniMed 780G has helped simplify my diabetes management.”
And she lives a busy life: not only does the 34-year-old appear in the show Everyone Is Doing Great, but she also serves as a producer and writer for Season 2.
“It absolutely is a full-time job, managing type 1 diabetes and trying to be a producer, be a writer, do all of these things,” Alexandra said. “You may have two days of nothing going on, and then three auditions come in, or we have a writers’ session, and we have to start pre-production. It all boils down to managing and stabilizing your blood sugar levels. So the highs and lows are really disruptive, not just physically but also psychologically; they may be extremely unpleasant and infuriating.
Fortunately, she has an excellent support system in her co-star and husband, James Lafferty.
After all, she credits her loved ones with assisting her in discovering the most effective ways to manage her diabetes, such as the Medtronic insulin pump, which helps her maintain her blood sugar level. She explained, “I’ve got my family members, my husband, they’re always looking at what’s out there, what technology has developed.”
“I have great support, my husband’s incredibly supportive,” she said of the One Tree Hill alum, whom she will married in 2022. “You do kind of need that—you need someone else looking out for you.”
