Brian Barczyk passed away

Brian Barczyk, a reptile and amphibian specialist with 5.28 million followers, passed away on Jan. 14 of stage 4 incurable pancreatic cancer, his colleagues announced on social media. He was 54.

“On behalf of the Barczyk family and our entire team at The Reptarium, it is with profound sorrow that we announce the passing of our beloved Brian Barczyk,” read a message uploaded to his Instagram account on January 15. “More than the guiding light of our organization, Brian’s fervent passion for reptiles and wildlife, along with his steadfast dedication to education, has touched innumerable hearts and minds globally.”

The statement praised the YouTuber as a “visionary, mentor, and friend,” adding, “For those of us who had the privilege of working alongside him, Brian’s absence leaves an immeasurable void.” As we traverse this difficult time, we take solace in Brian’s memory and the continuing impact of his work. He will be sorely missed, but never forgotten.

Barczyk made significant contributions to the animal world. Along with creating successful YouTube videos on reptile species, he developed The Reptarium, a reptile zoo in Michigan, and LegaSea, which is now under construction. According to People, the animal fanatic also had the world’s third-largest snake collection, with over 30,000 in his hands.

Barcyzk first announced his cancer diagnosis in a March 2023 YouTube video and tracked his struggle on the channel until Jan. 5, when he revealed that he will be entering hospice care.

“I pray that you guys will continue to watch the vlog, to follow along, because nothing is going to change,” Barczyk said in the 16-minute video. “Our message remains the same. The only difference is that you won’t see me. But believe me, guys, I’m ready. It was a difficult year. “It was extremely painful.”

He went on to say, “You know, this was probably the only way I was going to beat cancer.” It was not because I quit up. I did not give up. I was ready. It was quite the struggle… I’m telling you, I’m a tough person, and I’m not sure how others do it. “It’s so hard.”

Barcyzk closed the video with a positive message, stating, “I’m going to be able to look down on the LegaSea, my family, and everyone I care about.” I adore you both. “You guys, be good and inspire people.”

Barcyzk is survived by Lori, his wife of 35 years, and their two children, Noah and Jade.
