The Fifty Shades of Grey actress shared a rare glimpse into her life with lover Chris Martin, revealing how supportive he has been during her darkest times.
“A few weeks ago, I was having a low day,” she explained to Hello at the 2023 Hope for Depression Research Foundation luncheon. “And my partner said to me, ‘Are you really struggling?’ and I said ‘No?'”
“‘Baby, you’re wearing a Cats T-shirt,’ he remarked. “Like the music in Cats,” Dakota continued. “As it turns out, I was really suffering. But that moment raised me up and drew me out.”
Dakota, who has struggled with depression since she was a teenager and is raised by parents Don Johnson and Melanie Griffith, revealed that she has decided to be more open about her feelings after recognizing she has the ability to assist others.
“If me saying one little hopeful thing or one maybe relatable thing can help one other person feel a little bit better or a little bit less alone with their experience,” she went on to remark, “then I am a very willing advocate.”
“Covering my pain or anxiety with comedy has become a lifelong tool for me, and I don’t think it’s a bad thing; it works, and it helps me,” she continued. Because sometimes I weep if I don’t laugh.”
But Chris, whom she began seeing in 2017, has been at her side through it all, giving her a taste of paradise by serenading her at concerts, taking her to Malibu Beach, and even binge-watching Squid Game with her over the previous six years.
