Dan Walker will no doubt have stunned fans when he disclosed the terrifying circumstances of his cancer scare on Friday.
On Kate Thornton’s White Wine Question Time podcast, the 46-year-old detailed the events leading up to an ambulance rush to the hospital. During the honest talk, he stated that in 2012, he was told he had a tumor in his stomach while in a hospital in Poland.
“I was covering the European Championships in Poland a few years ago when I noticed a strange lump in my stomach.”
“My breathing was changing a little bit, so I went to the medical center in the broadcast center there, and I was in the back of an ambulance on my way to a Polish A&E in two and a half minutes.”
“And Richard Hughes, who is now the editor of Match Of The Day and with whom I’d worked for many years, dropped everything and came with me.”
“There are times in life when you feel like you need someone to hold your hand.”
”It did become a bit scary that night – at two o’clock in the morning a Polish specialist came in and informed me that I had cancer because they’d detected some shadows on my kidney. He used the phrase “tumor.”
The pair had a translator who spoke English and Polish and was questioned by the TV host if he understood the doctor correctly. She went on to say: “He thinks you’ve got cancer in your kidney.”
Dan asked the expert to double-check his diagnosis before giving the devastating news to his family; happily, it was not.
“At eight o’clock in the morning, she came in straight away and she said ‘I’ve got good news, it’s not a tumour.'” Dan wasn’t feeling well and was inadvertently fighting a deadly illness in his kidneys.
“On my kidneys, there appeared a series of dark shadows. Because they were down to approximately 30% functioning, I had this strange infection that had really impacted them. Dan awoke to a terrifying scene after being released with hefty medicine to attempt to get his kidneys functional properly.”
“My entire body was swollen, and I couldn’t even put on my boxer shorts.” I was going around nude, unable to put my trousers on since my body was so swollen from the unprocessed water. I resembled the Marshmallow Man from Ghostbusters.” Fans will be happy to know that Dan recovered from the event in less than 48 hours.”
