In a statement made on Wednesday, the French Interior Minister Gerald Darmanin, stated that around 300,000 people would be allowed to attend the opening ceremony for the Paris 2024 Olympics. This number is almost half of what was initially planned.
An opening ceremony will be staged for the very first time outside of a typical stadium setting on July 26th, when a massive display will be performed on the River Seine. Tens of thousands of police officers and troops will be deployed as part of the major security operation that will also be involved.
A path that is 3.7 miles long will be taken by boats on the Seine as the athletes are paraded through the heart of the French capital city. In addition to the numerous security cordons, onlookers will be lined up along both banks of the river.
During an interview with channel France 2, a French TV station, Darmanin stated that the present designs would make it possible for more than 220,000 people to receive free tickets on the higher embankments of the river, in addition to 100,000 paying spectators who would have a view of the waterline.
Initially, the organizers had anticipated that around 600,000 people would be able to see the event at the venue. In their explanation for revising such data, Darmanin did not provide any explanation.
He said that he is sleeping well when asked if he was experiencing sleeplessness as a result of thinking about the event.
“I know that we have the best security forces in the world and we’ll be able to show that France is capable of winning medals and, above all, of hosting the world without any problems,” added the ambassador.
French President Emmanuel Macron stated in December that the ceremony may be changed for concerns of security in the event that France is struck by another assault by extremists in the days leading up to the event. As an illustration of the kind of catastrophic situation that may need a reevaluation, he referenced the massacres that were carried out by terrorists in Paris in the year 2015.
