Lisa Rinna is up about the medication that helped her cope with the “suffering” that was her menopausal experience.
The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills star, Lisa Rinna, who marked her 60th birthday in July, spoke openly about aging, which she described as “disgracefully,” and why she supports hormone replacement medication.
In an interview with Cosmopolitan for their Sex Over 60 edition, the reality television star discussed her first concerns about HRT, followed by relief.
First, she explained how her approach to sex altered as she grew older, saying, “As we age, our hormones change, and we change. I mean, we are not reproducing. It essentially comes down to procreation. And when you ovulate, the universe tells you that you need to have a baby because you are sexual. So I believe it’s quite intriguing to go through menopause.”
She said, “The reality is, you change. You don’t want to have a baby. So you’re not as insanely sexually motivated – you just aren’t. I’m a huge fan of hormones because I believe that without them, life is [crap] awful.
“They have been really helpful in my being able to stay feeling good about myself,” she said.
Further explaining her choice and experience, she admitted: “I was extremely terrified of it since both my mother and my sister had breast cancer and were quite against it,” adding: “My mom used HRT for years and years and years, and they think her breast cancer had something to do with it. “That was extremely terrifying.”
Nonetheless, she said, “I didn’t take hormones in the beginning of menopause, and I was really suffering,” and revealed, “Everything you can go through, I was going through it.” I couldn’t sleep, I had hot flashes, and I was nervous, furious, and a complete mess.”
She then revealed: “I see an Eastern-Western medicine doctor. And I went to him one day, and he asked, ‘Why aren’t you on hormones?’ And I answered, “Well, because my mother and sister had breast cancer.” He responded, ‘Okay, wait on.’ “I was probably 52 at the time.”
Lisa recalls his warning her, “If you don’t take hormones, your hair will fall out.” Your skin will become dry. You won’t be able to have sex because your vagina will be so dry, and you’ll be on two antidepressants by the time you’re 60, which will be too late.”
She quickly changed her mind and underwent bioidentical, a lab-processed, plant-based hormone treatment, stating, “That was eight years ago, and I haven’t looked back. And listen, if taking them would make my life better, I will do it.
Lisa finally quipped, “If you took away my hormones, I would definitely murder you. I genuinely believe they’re beneficial in so many ways.”
